Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment
Industry Background
Palm oil milling generates substantial quantities of high-strength wastewater known as POME. It typically contains high concentrations of COD and BOD, suspended solids, oil and grease, and fibrous residues. This results in viscous sludge that is difficult to dewater. Without proper treatment, POME poses significant environmental risks. Therefore, dewatering equipment must provide strong oil resistance, anti-clogging performance and long-term operational stability.
Technical Approach
This project deployed Haibar’s reinforced belt filter press with several optimisations for palm oil sludge:
- Anti-grease structural design and corrosion-resistant materials
- Enhanced flocculation system to improve sludge formation under high oil content
- Oil-resistant filter cloth to reduce clogging
- Automatic tensioning, tracking and efficient washing systems for continuous operation
On-site Photos
The photos were taken at the wastewater treatment facility of a palm oil mill in Southeast Asia. The Haibar belt filter press, delivered in 2024, is currently used to treat palm oil sludge with high grease and fibrous content. The equipment operates smoothly, with a clean filter cloth and no grease build-up on key components. The resulting sludge cakes are uniform and compact. Since commissioning, the system has significantly improved the client's solid waste management efficiency and reduced the cost of downstream transport and disposal.
